Anyone with access to a public key can encrypt a message in a public-key encryption system, creating a ciphertext. However, only those who have access to the associated private key can decrypt the ciphertext to reveal the original message.

Asymmetric-key cryptography’s fundamental challenge is demonstrating that a public key is genuine and has not been altered or restored by an unintentional third party. Using a public-key infrastructure (PKI), where one or more certificate authorities attest ownership of key pairs, is a good solution to this issue. The “web of trust” mechanism is another strategy employed by PGP to guarantee the authenticity of key pair. For instance, a journalist can make the public key of a pair of encryption keys available online so that sources can submit ciphertext messages to a news organization.
